The Johns Manville Insulation Products Checklist I Use After $8,000 in Mistakes

I'm a commercial insulation contractor, and I've been ordering Johns Manville insulation products for nine years. I've also made mistakes that cost a few thousand dollars and a few sleepless nights. The first was in 2018. The most recent was in early 2024, and it was the one that finally made me build a checklist.

Before I get into the steps, here is the short version: if you order insulation the way most people order construction supplies, you will eventually have a problem. The fix is a 5-check process that takes about 15 minutes. Since February 2024, it has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework.

Step 1: Write the exact product number, not the category

I still remember writing 'Johns Manville thermal and sound control insulation' on a material request and thinking that was enough. It wasn't. That product family includes batts, boards, facings, and densities for different assemblies. Without the exact product number, you're gambling with someone else's schedule.

On a September 2022 hotel job, we ordered faced batts for an interior partition that required unfaced batts. The spec said 'unfaced' and I skimmed it. The pallet was foil-faced. The inspector flagged it on day one. That mistake cost a restocking fee and a two-day delay. It was preventable.

When you look at a JM product data sheet, check three things: thickness, density, and facing. If any of those are wrong, the R-value and sound performance will not match the assembly. Step 3: Know whether the assembly is thermal, sound, or both

A check valve body is a moving part. It needs to stay accessible. A sight glass—older trade guys call it a watch glass—needs to stay visible. If you bury either one under fiberglass pipe insulation, you will be cutting it out on the next service call. I know because I've done it.

The fix is simple: before you order, take a photo of the mechanical space. Email it to the person creating the material list. Mark every valve, gauge, and access opening. It takes ten minutes. It saves a full day of cutting and swearing.

Step 5: Store the material so it still matches spec

You can ruin a perfect order by storing it badly. Fiberglass batts are not furniture. They are more like the duvet and the duvet cover combined: the thickness is the part that does the work. Compress them and you compress the air spaces that create the R-value.
