Johns Manville R30 and R13 Unfaced Insulation: An Inspector's Checklist

I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at Johns Manville. I review every order that leaves our facility—roughly 200 SKU variants a year. Maybe 180, I'd have to check the system. Over four years, I've rejected more first runs than I can count. Q1 2025? 6% of initial deliveries came back for facing damage, density readings out of tolerance, or labels that didn't match the product inside.

This checklist isn't the whole textbook. It's the one I'd hand to a contractor before opening a pallet of Johns Manville R30 insulation or Johns Manville R13 unfaced insulation. It's short, practical, and it assumes you'd rather catch a problem before it costs you a redo.

Before You Start: Read This, Not Just the Label

I want to say every job starts with the spec sheet, but don't quote me on that. The label on the bag is a start. The spec sheet is the truth. If a project calls for unfaced insulation in a wall, don't let someone swap in R13 from a different production line without a submittal. It's tempting to think all R13 is the same. It isn't. Density, facer adhesion, and width all vary between runs.

Here's the thing: if the color on the package looks off—the JM logo is printed to a Pantone color standard—that's a packaging flag, but it can also mean the line was switched out mid-run. We treat printing deviations as a quality issue. You should too.

Step 1: Match the Product to the Cavity

For attic floors and ceiling assemblies, Johns Manville R30 insulation is a common choice. For 2x4 wall cavities, Johns Manville R13 unfaced insulation is usually where my eyes go. Unfaced means there's no kraft vapor retarder, so it belongs in interior walls or in assemblies where a separate vapor barrier is provided. If you're installing R30 in a roof system with vent chutes, make sure the baffles are in place first.

Check the cavities before you cut anything. Don't tell yourself you'll just trim it. If the cavity is 3-1/2 inches deep and the insulation is 6 inches thick, you're compressing an R13 or an R30 and dropping its performance. Measure the cavity depth. Period.

Step 2: Check the Substrate for Surprises

This is the step most people ignore. Before you unroll a single bag, walk the job site and look for:

  • Air leaks, especially around rim joists and electrical penetrations.
  • Recessed lights that are not IC-rated.
  • Old fasteners sticking out of framing—including stripped screws from a previous insulation or drywall layer.

If the room also needs window glass replacement, do that before the insulation work. Any broken glass, glazing compound, or caulk that falls into an open wall cavity becomes a hazard during insulation installation. Glass shards mixed with fiberglass are a nightmare to clean out. I've seen crews try to fish them out with a magnet. Didn't work. Save yourself the hassle and sequence the glazing first.

Step 3: Understand What Fiberglass Is (and Isn't)

Fiberglass is made from glass. That's true. But it's not like a glass water bottle that shattered and was somehow spun into a soft, fibrous mat. The fibers are engineered to a specific diameter and length for thermal performance and to minimize irritation. Still, treat it with respect. Long sleeves, gloves, respiratory protection. I've had homeowners tell me they've done this before and it didn't itch, right before they spent 20 minutes in the shower. Not an expert, but I'll pass.

One more thing: don't let anyone use a glass water bottle as a makeshift roller to compress insulation. I saw it once on a retrofit job. The bottle cracked, and then we had broken glass and shredded facing. Use the proper tools. Simple.

Step 4: Install R13 Unfaced and R30 the Right Way

For R13 unfaced insulation in wall cavities, the material should fit snugly but not be forced. Most of today's products are designed to be slightly wider than the cavity so they stay put by friction. If you have to squash it with the drywall, the R-value is partly broken. For R30 attic insulation, avoid gaps at the edges and at the junction with the top plate. Gaps are like leaving a window open in winter—except the window is hidden behind drywall.

This works for standard wood framing. If you're dealing with a cathedral ceiling, an unvented roof assembly, or a steel stud system, the calculus might be different. In those cases, I'd recommend consulting the manufacturer's installation instructions or an engineer. I'm not a structural engineer, so I can't speak to vapor drive in every climate zone. What I can tell you from a quality perspective is that compression and voids show up on thermal imaging, and they show up fast.

Step 5: How to Remove a Stripped Screw (When You Find One)

You will find stripped screws. Usually in the final bay, when a baffle or furring strip is due to be fastened. Knowing how to remove a stripped screw is as important as knowing how to install insulation. If the screw head is stripped but the shank is still intact:

  1. Switch to a larger driver bit—square, torx, or the next size up in hex. Press down hard and turn slowly. Extra pressure is the first fix.
  2. Try a flat-head screwdriver that fits diagonally across the head and tap it gently with a hammer.
  3. No luck yet? Use a rubber band or a piece of steel wool over the screw head for extra grip, then drive with the original bit.
  4. Last resort: drill off the head with a metal bit, remove the insulation around the shank, and pull the screw shank with pliers.

This isn't the only method. There are dozens on YouTube. But these are the four I've seen work on job sites without making holes worse. Patience beats horsepower here.

The Cost Question: Ask What's Not Included

I have mixed feelings about how insulation pricing is marketed. On one hand, a low per-bag price looks great in a Google Ads sheet. On the other, it often leaves out delivery, pallet disposal, and job site repackaging fees. I've learned to ask what's NOT included before what's the price. The vendor that lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. A supplier who hides charges behind a low base price will find a way to make it up on the invoice.

This isn't about chasing the #1 cheapest option. It's about getting a number you can actually defend when the project is bid. If the quote doesn't show every line item, get one that does.

Final Notes

This checklist doesn't cover everything. It doesn't cover local code amendments, specialty fasteners, or the best way to handle a 1,000-square-foot attic in a 90-degree heat index. But it gets you through the first two hours of the job without a redo, which is more than I can say for the way I learned it.

So glad I started writing these down. Almost didn't, which would have meant repeating the same mistakes. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a batch of R13 unfaced sitting on the dock that needs another look.
