Johns Manville Insulation Reviews: A Contractor's Scenario-Based Guide

Look, I'm not going to pretend there is one best insulation. There isn't. I've been handling building-product orders for about nine years, and in that time I've made a pile of mistakes—16 significant ones, give or take, totaling maybe $25,000 in wasted budget. This article is my way of helping you skip the ones I still think about.

When people ask for Johns Manville insulation reviews, they usually want a yes/no answer. Here's the thing: the honest answer is “it depends.” The same product that works in an attic retrofit can be wrong for a metal building or a mechanical room. So instead of one generic review, I'll walk through four scenarios. Find yours.

Scenario 1: You're retrofitting an attic or open wall cavity

If you're trying to lower your energy bill and your wall cavities are open, fiberglass batts are the budget-friendly choice. They're easy to install, widely available, and JM makes formaldehyde-free fiberglass insulation in most residential lines. But fiberglass does almost nothing for air sealing. If you want to stop drafts, you need spray foam around the gaps first—or use a closed-cell foam product for the whole cavity.

In my first year, I made the classic newbie mistake: I ordered a full roll of insulation for a retrofit without checking the R-value on the data sheet. It looked right. The result was the wrong material for the wall thickness, and $2,800 later, I understood why “read the product data sheet” is not a suggestion. That mistake was in 2017, and I still think about it.

So if you're in this scenario, the “best” product depends on your priority. If you need the lowest cost and your framing is standard, go with batts. If you want the best thermal performance and you have the budget, spray foam is often worth it. If you're not sure, ask your distributor for the JM spec sheet before you order, not after.

Scenario 2: You're dealing with old siding or roofing

This is the one that scares people, and for good reason. “Johns Manville asbestos shingles” is a real search term because JM made asbestos-cement shingles for decades. The old Johns-Manville asbestos shingles were produced by the same corporate predecessor of today's Johns Manville. Current Johns Manville products do not contain asbestos, but old buildings often still have the historical materials.

If your house or building was built before the mid-1980s and has those old cement shingles, don't start chipping them off without testing. I once assumed a 1978 roof was “probably fine.” I was wrong. The lab test came back positive for chrysotile asbestos. So glad I paid for the rush lab report. If I remember correctly, it cost about $350 for 24-hour turnaround in March 2024. The cheaper option would have taken four days, and we would have blown the demolition deadline.

From then on, when a demo deadline is on the line, I pay the premium for a lab that guarantees its turnaround. An uncertain cheap price is the expensive choice. You're not just paying for speed. You're paying for certainty.

If you're in this scenario, here's the process I use now:

Get a test kit or hire an abatement inspector. Wait for the results. If it's negative, proceed normally. If it's positive, get a licensed abatement contractor, budget for disposal, and don't let anyone start the work until the containment plan is in place. Yes, this costs money. But the alternative is exposing workers or a family to something that can cause serious disease years later. That's not a budget item; that's a hard stop.

Scenario 3: You're replacing door trim

Door trim seems simple enough. Measure, cut, nail, done. I learned the hard way that “measure” doesn't mean “eyeball.” I once replaced a section of door trim by holding a piece up against the frame and guessing at the corner angle. The piece was 1/4 inch short, and the homeowner noticed within seconds. I had to go back, buy another piece, and install it correctly. It cost me a second trip and a lot of embarrassment.

If you're replacing door trim, my advice is:

  • Measure the reveal, not just the opening.
  • Use a miter saw with a stop block if you're cutting multiple pieces.

Scenario 4: You need to document a product spec before ordering

This one sounds too basic, but it's the reason I wrote this section. Knowing how to take a screenshot on Windows has saved me at least once a week since I actually learned it. Before that, I used to photograph my monitor with my phone. The resulting image was blurry, the barcode was unreadable, and I had to drive back to the distributor to look up a part number I should have had in my files.

The fix is simple. In Windows, press Win+Shift+S to open the Snipping Tool. Select the area you want, and it's copied to your clipboard. Paste it into an email, a project folder, or a note. That's it.

Why does this matter? Because product decisions in construction live or die by specs. A screenshot of the JM insulation data sheet can save you from guessing the R-value at the counter. A screenshot of a door trim profile can help you match it before you cut anything.

How do you know which scenario you're in?

If your project is about energy savings and you have open cavities, start with scenario 1. If the building might contain historical roofing or siding, scenario 2 takes priority over everything. If you're doing finish work, scenario 3 is your life. If you're ordering anything with a spec sheet, scenario 4 applies to you no matter what.

And if you're in two or three scenarios at once—like I usually am—tackle the safety one first.

A quick note on reviews, disclosures, and FTC rules

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), if a review is based on free products or sponsored content, that has to be disclosed. A typical small trim sample might weigh more than 4 ounces, so plan for around $2.34 or more. Verify current rates before you print a label. Also, under federal mailbox rules, only USPS-authorized items go in a residential mailbox—so if you're using UPS or FedEx, don't leave it in the box.

Real talk: the parts that aren't in a data sheet

I should add that my experience is based on mid-size commercial retrofits and residential jobs in the Southeast. If you're working on high-performance homes in Minnesota or northern Canada, your results will differ. I can't speak to every JM product line, and I don't want to pretend otherwise.

Also, two tiny lessons from the field:

  • Wear gloves around fiberglass. The itch is not worth it.
  • Keep a salt and stone deodorant in your field bag. The first time I met a homeowner after an attic inspection, I smelled terrible. Not a construction tip, but a mistake I won't repeat.

One more thing: if I'm being honest, I still kick myself for not learning the Win+Shift+S shortcut earlier. It took me years. Don't be me. Document the spec, validate the product, and test anything that might contain asbestos before you touch it.
