Choosing the Right Insulation: A Contractor's Perspective on Johns Manville Spray Foam vs. Other Options

There’s no universal answer—and that’s the first mistake most people make

When I first started specifying insulation for commercial projects, I assumed the decision was straightforward: pick the product with the best R-value per inch, and you're done. Six months and one very expensive re-insulation job later, I realized I was wrong. The real question isn't which insulation is best. It's which insulation is best for your specific conditions.

If you're looking at Johns Manville spray foam insulation products—or comparing them against fiberglass batts or rigid board—you're probably dealing with one of three common scenarios. Let's walk through each one.

Scenario A: You're focused on air sealing and moisture control

This is where spray foam shines. Closed-cell spray polyurethane foam (ccSPF) from Johns Manville, like their ProGlas or OEM lines, creates a continuous air barrier. It stops thermal bridging in ways that fiberglass batts simply can't.

  3. What's your budget for labor + material, installed? Under $1.00 per square foot installed? Batts or rigid board. Over $1.50? Spray foam starts making sense.
  4. How much risk can you absorb for schedule delays? Spray foam requires temperature and humidity coordination. If the timeline is tight and weather is unpredictable, rigid board or fiberglass might be safer.

The mistake I see most often: Contractors pick a product based on a single metric (R-value) and ignore the complexity of the building assembly. That's how you end up with condensation, thermal bridging, or a call from the client asking why their energy bill didn't drop.
